A radically different approach to subsystem design and integration is needed if the Lockheed Martin F-35 and future "sixth-generation" fighters now on the drawing board are to be equipped with high-power sensors and directed-energy weapons now in development. "From the F-4 to the F-22 we have always had power and thermal margin for upgrades. The F-35 is at a cusp of an energy gap," says Ron Morinishi, Boeing program manager for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) Integrated Vehicle Energy Technology (Invent) demonstration. "The growth we need to build in is much greater," he says. Boeing is prime contractor for the five-year Invent program.
