The proposed $18.4 billion takeover of Goodrich by United Technologies Corp. involves companies whose business units are working together in ways that both serve the civil aviation establishment and challenge it. Nowhere is the latter more true than in the nacelle work that Goodrich Aerostruc-tures has developed for the PW1100G series of geared turbofan engines from UTC's Pratt & Whitney. As it developed the engine's nacelle, thrust reverser and a new variable area fan nozzle (VAFN) to control engine exhaust, Goodrich worked more closely with Pratt than it has on previous engine programs, says Vice President Jeff Rogers, Aero-structures' head of business and product strategy.
