Seventeen senators led by Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) are asking President Barack Obama to make recovery and destruction of Libya's stockpile of man-portable air defense systems the "utmost" priority. Teams of contractors were sent to Libya to find the Manpads, and last month Army Gen. Carter Ham, chief of Africa Command, said, "There are ringing indicators that some Manpads-type nonspecific-have left the country." Collins told Obama, "Each day that goes by that we don't have all of the remaining anti-aircraft missiles secured increas- es the threat to Americans." Derrin Smith, an adviser to an inter-agency task force on Manpads, says predictions of large numbers of the weapons being smuggled to Al Qaeda's desert strongholds have not been realized.
