Researchers plan to flight-test a one-third-scale version of an electric-powered, tail-sitting, vertical-takeoff-and-landing single-person aircraft called the Puffin. The concept, unveiled by a NASA-led team at the American Helicopter Society (AHS) aeromechanics conference in San Francisco in January, forms the basis of a potential electric-power technology testbed rather than a vehicle design. The preliminary concept blends the range, speed and altitude capabilities of a fixed-wing aircraft with the hovering ability of a helicopter. Like previous tail-sitter designs, it can also transition between vertical and horizontal flight without the complexity of tilting wings or engines.
