At a U.S. Air Force Association symposium, senior of-rnflcers look up at a big screen as the newest securityrnthreat flashes up. Instead of a stealthy aircraft, hyper-rnsonic weapon or spacecraft, everyone in the room staresrninto the unreadable eyes of a Chinese teenager. "This is a guy named Tan Wei Lin," says Alan Paller, research director at the SANS Institute, a computer security organization specializing in intensive training to help defend systems and networks. Tan, better known within the shadowy ranks of cyberspace hackers by his avatar "Withered Rose," is a "world-class" operator believed to be behind a spate of successful cyber-attacks on U.S. defense facilities and organizations.
