The first new commercial airport in the U.S. in 15 years-Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP)-is ready to begin operations.rnThe facility, which is scheduled to open on May 23, will replace the Panama City-Bay County International Airport (PFN). The latter will serve generalrnaviation for several more weeks, then will be decommissioned so the land can be redeveloped.rnThe new airport will be the first greenfield facility in the U.S. serving passenger airlines since Denver International Airport opened in 1995. Planning for the Florida project beganrnin 1998, when the airport authority decided not to expand PFN, which is hemmed in by neighborhoods and St. Andrews Bay. A major highway and protected habitat in the bay blocked expansion of the runway, and moving the adjacent houses and commercial structures would have been too costly.
