Even though it is halting production Aug. 9-13, Piper Aircraft has increased its payroll and output substantially in the past year and says its Piper Jet development program "is full speed ahead."rnThe week-long furlough, an alternative to outright layoffs during the recession, affects management as well as hourly personnel; however, those working on the Piper Jet are exempted. In fact, Randy Groom, Piper's executive vice president, says the company has hired 60-70 engineers for work on the jet, "so we've got quite a buzz going on here right now."
