Pratt & Whitney will complete the first ground-test phase of the production geared turbofan (GTF) by early December amid hopes that early results will encourage Airbus to formally commit to re-engining A320s with a higher-thrust derivative. The GTF trials are pivotal to the success of Pratt's long-term ambitions to reclaim market share in the commercial jet arena, and are focused initially on the PW1524G destined for Bombardier's CSeries airliner. Adding to the standard challenges faced by any engine maker starting runs of a new turbofan, the tests also mark the first evaluations of a completely new core and low-pressure system combination as well as several unique design features.
