Key achievements by two European-based startups are paving the way for introduction of satellite broadband service in Europe and emerging markets. Late last month, U.K.-based Avanti Communications launched Hylas-1, the first spacecraft in Europe dedicated to providing high-speed Internet access to businesses and households that are underserved or beyond the reach of terrestrial cables. The 2.5-metric-ton satellite employs adaptable payload technology-developed by Astrium with the assistance of the European Space Agency-that allows data output to be tailored to meet demand.
