Betting on aviation that serves this gambling mecca near Hong Kong might seem like a "sure thing," based on the fact that Macau grossed $10 billion-plus last year-more than Las Vegas and the rest of Nevada combined. But like many a sure thing, it's not panning out this year. A generally sour economy has led to casinos laying off workers, and new travel restrictions imposed by Beijing on gamblers from China threaten to dim Macau's prospects even further. Demand has eroded for a host of reasons. An opening of weekend charter flights between Taiwan and mainland China have diverted a core supply of traffic from Macau, which served as a way station, and additional scheduled flights planned for later this year will probably worsen the situation.
