After 14 years, the Government Accountability Office has removed the FAA's air traffic modernization efforts from its high-risk list. It was the only program removed from the list this year, and the action is a real victory for the aviation industry. The GAO is known for being stingy with compliments and I read this one as an endorsement of the FAA's program management capabilities. The report confirms the FAA has reversed the program management problems from previous decades and should boost development of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). That kind of change, was possible because of long-term leadership, the support of the industry and government and the combination of private- and public-sector expertise.
