Unrelated factors on both sides of the Atlantic are setting the stage for further consolidation in the satellite telecommunications industry. In the U.S., a reported 11th-hour pitch by Liberty Media for Sirius XM Radio has threatened to set up a bidding war between Liberty-controlled DirecTV and archrival EchoStar for the digital radio service provider. EchoStar boss Charlie Ergen has been buying Sirius debt since the autumn in an attempt to take over troubled Sirius, which as widely predicted has been unable to overcome the effects of a tanking economy, swooning auto sales-which account for a large share of its 20 million subscribers-and increased inroads from wireless devices, despite a long-sought merger with competitor XM Radio.
