The Indian defense ministry and EADS are negotiating codevelopment of an active electronically scanned avray radar. The discussions are part of a wider effort-including re-engining-to revamp India's Light Combat Aircraft. Alongside refreshing the LCA, initial design and development work is continuing on the twin-engine Medium Combat Aircraft, a 20-ton-class, next-generation fighter planned with low-observable characteristics and an internal weapons bay. The MCA project is part of a twin-track effort, also including the LCA, to overhaul the air force's combat aircraft inventory and sustain and develop the country's aerospace and defense industry. In addition, India is continuing to acquire combat aircraft from Russia and is also considering a Western purchase.
