摘要

High-level government and industry discussions in the coming weeks will not just help decide the fate of the A400M transport-they could also shape the face of European airlift fleets in the medium term. A series of closely related talks is planned to sort out how to deal with years of delays associated with the A400M, including whether the program should survive. A wholesale termination is possible after Mar. 31, since the aircraft program will have failed to fly by then. Such a move could force industry to repay €5.7 billion ($7.2 billion) in pre-delivery payments. But that is not likely: A termination decision would have to be made unanimously by the partner countries, and France has signaled it will stick with the program. Even so, the industry team, in which EADS is the biggest stakeholder, likely faces more costs. EADS's earnings will probably be hit this year with another charge once the program's future is settled and the company knows exactly what lies ahead, according to CEO Louis Gallois. The company has already taken €2.2 billion in financial charges on the project in the last two years, notes Chief Financial Officer Hans-Peter Ring.
