In a turnaround from earlier practice, India's military is now looking at an off-the-shelf spares exchange program from suppliers as a package with the original equipment purchase. The air force has for decades struggled to support a disparate inventory of Russian-made fighter types, many of which are now aging. Without having locked in spares availability as part of the original purchase, finding spares is sometimes a challenge years later.rn"We want a single point contact," the air force's chief maintenance officer, Air Marshal K.M. Ramasundra, told AVIATION WEEK's Military Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Executive Round-table here. "Our contracts for Boeing Business Jets, Embraer and umanned air vehicles [from] Israel specifies the availability" of spares.
