Rolls-Royce is gearing up to begin test runs of its environmentally friendly engine (EFE) research project. But attempts to turn U.K. Defense Ministry interest into financial support have been stymied, at least for this stage of the program.rnThe EFE is aimed at a 10% reduction in carbon dioxide and a 60% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions relative to current engines. The joint U.K. government/Rolls-Royce testbed is based on the Trent 1000 developed for the Boeing 787, but with more advanced features.rnThe EFE core work, however, also could feed into next-generation military propulsion, including for unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs).rnIndustry and the Defense Ministry had been discussing the latter's joining the program. Funding pressures likely quashed these ambitions. Rolls is proving the powerplant for the Taranis UCAV demonstrator with the Adour 951. The Taranis air vehicle is now in assembly, and a first flight is due in 2010.
