Aurora Flight Sciences has flown a prototype solar-powered unmanned aircraft as a step toward development of an ultra-long-endurance surveillance platform. The 114-ft.-span SunLight Eagle flew twice on May 12 at New Mexico State University's Physical Sciences Laboratory in Las Cruces.rnOriginally built and flown in 1987 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a prototype for the Daedalus human-powered aircraft project, the Light Eagle was taken out of storage and about 8O% of the upper surface of the wing covered with thin-film solar cells. The solar array drives an electric motor to power the 12-ft.-dia. propeller and charge batteries to allow the 165-lb. aircraft to fly through the night. Electromechanical servos were installed on all control surfaces.
