Europe's pioneering Herschel and Planck telescopes, 20 years in the making, are finally en route to their orbital position 1.2 million km. (750,000 mi.) from Earth, following a high-stakes dual liftoff last week.rnThe twin-satellite payload was launched from the European Spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana, atop an Ariane 5 ECA booster at 3:12 p.m. Paris time (10:12 a.m. local time) on May 14. At 3:38, Herschel, the top passenger, separated from the Ariane upper stage at an altitude of 1,150 km. over the east coast of Africa. The Sylda support structure enclosing Planck ejected 1.5 min. later, followed at 3:40 p.m. by Planck itself, at an altitude of 1,700 km.
