The Qantas group's low-fare affiliate, Jetstar, looks set to benefit from the current traffic downturn by profitably gaining market share over legacy competitors, including Qantas Airways.rnJetstar was founded five years ago as an Australian domestic low-fare carrier to compete with Virgin Blue and later Tiger Airways. Now it is about to prove the industry wrong in two widespread convictions: that long-haul low-cost operations do not work and that a low-cost carrier cannot be part of a bigger group that also includes a long-established legacy airline because group concerns override the LCC's flexibility requirements.
