Honeywell will test a variable-speed auxiliary power unit as part of a raft of emerging technologies aimed at reducing fuel burn, noise and exhaust emissions for both current and future generations of APUs.rnAPUs provide power for engine startup, electrical systems and cabin air conditioning, but most run at constant speed regardless of overall aircraft demand to maintain a uniform electrical supply. The option to look at a variable-speed APU is becoming viable through modern electrical systems, and is driven by emerging regulatory requirements as well as industry-wide pressures tornreduce operating costs through lower fuel consumption and improved duty cycles.
