As businesses look for signs of when the global economy will stop sinking, investors already have called the bottom for commercial aerospace stocks. It occurred at the beginning of March, when the price of a share of Boeing Co. was as little as $29.05. Since then, aerospace stocks have staged a strong rally, though they remain far below their peak prices of the fall of 2007. During the past three months, shares in Boeing, Goodrich Corp. and Precision Castparts Corp. have risen 66%, while Embraer is up 74% and Spirit AeroSystems Holdings 59%. B/E Aerospace Inc. and Allegheny Technologies Inc., two of the hardest-hit stocks in 2008, have both increased by 119%. Those gains outpaced the S&P 500 index, which rose by 34% during the same period. "It's a move off the bottom," says Robert Stallard, an A&D analyst at Macquarie Research Equities. "Investors try to look as far forward when they possibly can, and they believe we've seen the worst."
