Test engineers will accelerate the first "eCore" for CFM International's next-generation Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion (LEAP56) engine development effort this week, following its initial run at General Elec-tric's site in Evendale, Ohio, June 12.rnThe "eCore 1" forms the heart of the General Electric-Snecma Leap-X program, which is developing a raft of technologies for a next-generation CFM56 starting in 2016. A follow-on eCore 2, scheduled to begin tests in mid-2011, will form the basis for the high-pressure spool of the full-up engine demonstrator planned for 2012. The engine will be a conventional advanced turbofan, but CFM says the Leap-X technologies, and particularly the core, could also provide the heart of a future open rotor.
