NASA will attempt to back the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit out of the patch of soft soil where it has been trapped for almost six months, but acknowledges that if this process fails, the rover will probably be stuck for good.rnThe attempt is planned for Nov. T6 when the rover will be sent a command for about 5 meters (16.5 ft.) of wheel drive, with results expected back at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) the following day. "We will have several of these drives, interspersed with analysis days" says JPL Mars Rover project manager John Callas.
