Delta appears to be the airline to watch to make the first move on a merger with either Northwest or United. Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, met with two Northwest vice presidents last week because of his concerns over industry consolidation, and was told Northwest is indeed discussing the benefits of a merger with Delta, although Delta is also doing the same with United. Delta says it will make no comment at this time. Oberstar was told by the vice presidents that they see some benefits to a merger, according to his office.
