A ew wave of Asian and European hybrid spectrum geostationary mobile service satellites are emerging just as the first North American GEO spacecraft are poised for launch, suggesting that heady days await the MSS segment. The hybrid systems, featuring new L- and S-band digital broadcasting standards, less bulky and costly hand terminals and ground towers known as the ancillary terrestrial component (ATC), substantially increase bandwidth while permitting quality affordable reception everywhere—including indoors. This eliminates the drawbacks that drove the first generation of low-Earth-orbit satphone systems into bankruptcy. The systems can also be used for a wider range of tasks than first-generation LEO satphone networks, including mobile TV/audio, two-way broadband, interactive position determination, asset tracking and phone and data transmission.
