摘要

WC-130JS assigned to the Air Force Reserve's 403rd Wing at Keesler AFB, Miss., received the last of 10 radiometers Feb. 15. The "stepped-frequency microwave radiometer" (SFMR), or smurf, is a novel sensor mounted below the WC-130J wing to continuously and accurately measure the winds at the ocean's surface directly below the aircraft. "The SFMR will be the biggest advance I can think of to improve hurricane intensity forecasts," says Max Mayfield, former director of the National Hurricane Center. As the aircraft flies through a storm, the smurf senses microwave radiation naturally emitted from sea foam created by surface winds.
