Australia is seeking to fill a major gap in its military capabilities with Boeing EA-18 Growler electronic warfare aircraft, which it says it may now order as part of its purchase of the standard two-seat version of the Super Hornet, the F/A-18F. The new Labor government, elected in November, says it will stick with the contract for 24 Super Hornets, which it previously said might be canceled. While flagging one new capability with the EA-18Gs, the government also confirms that an old one will be withdrawn: the Royal Australian Air Force's General Dynamics F-111 strike bombers, which will be retired on schedule in 2010. In a review of air combat requirements, Defense Minister Joel Fitzgibbon now endorses the Super Hornet as "an excellent aircraft capable of meeting any known threat in the region"—code for Indonesian Sukhoi Su-27s and Su-30s.
