The European Space Agency is preparing to begin development work on the first three spacecraft for its Global Monitoring for Environment and Security system as it gears up for a second-phase expansion plan that is expected to more than double the initial fleet. Thales Alenia Space was awarded a €305-million ($488-million) contract Apr. 14 for Sentinel 3, the second of five dedicated Sentinel satellites that will form the backbone of the space segment of GMES, which is being developed under ESA responsibility. To be launched in 2012 atop a Vegaclass launcher, the 1.2-metric-ton Sentinel 3 will provide oceanography and land vegetation monitoring data. The satellite will be equipped with an ocean/land color instrument, a sea/ land temperature radiometer, a radar altimeter and a microwave radiometer. The altimeter will provide high-inclination data to ensure continuity with the agency's Envisat spacecraft, but at higher performance and availability levels. Thales Alenia will be responsible for the color monitor and altimeter, as well as satellite integration.
