Important tests loom for the new composite-fuselage approach that Airbus has embraced for the A350XWB wide-body transport, with the aim of optimizing design and manufacturing processes. Moreover, the company is progressing with the allocation of major structural work packages for the aircraft, despite setbacks related to EADS's failure to unload assembly sites in France and Germany to risk-sharing partners. Last week, Airbus announced an agreement with Spirit AeroSystems to build Section 15 of the A350, the upper shell of the mid-fuselage (see following story). Another major work package to be allocated soon is the wing's fixed leading edge. The trailing edge will be made by GKN, assuming that its purchase of parts of the Filton, England, production site is completed.
