As a company with decades of proven performance in meeting America's aerial refueling needs, we at Boeing were dismayed to read the Viewpoint by Jerry W. Cox saying the tanker offered by an unproven U.S.-European team was better-suited to address the evolving needs of the warfighter (AW&ST May 12, p. 66). It doesn't add up. We also regret that Cox chose not to focus any attention on the irregularities in the acquisition process that resulted in the choice of the Airbus-based aircraft. The original mission became lost in the process-a medium-sized tanker for which cargo and passenger transport were secondary considerations. As the requirements were changed to accommodate the bigger, less-capable Airbus plane, evaluators discounted the significant strengths of the KC-767, compromising on operational capabilities and even the survivability of the tanker during its most dangerous missions.
