摘要

Takehiko Kahto, a representative of Japan's space agency in Washington in the mid-1990s, used to say that, when he came to the U.S., he had the smallest pressurized module planned for what became the International Space Station. "Now I have the largest," he would joke, in reference to the shrinking size of the U.S. and European laboratory designs. Today, after the STS-124/1J ISS assembly mission, Japan really does have the largest pressurized module on the space station. Kibo's long-awaited arrival at the station on the space shuttle Discovery, and its near-flawless checkout, has added room for 23 more active experiment racks on the ISS. But it is unclear how-and if-they will be used over the long haul. In the upcoming "stage" between shuttle visits, three U.S. racks will be moved into Kibo from the U.S. Destiny lab to begin experiments there. Overall, the U.S. controls about half of the rack space on the station. But while Japan and the European Union are ready to make up for time lost after the Columbia accident and begin using the ISS for scientific and industrial research, the U.S. station-science program is stalled.
