摘要

The recent letter lamenting the loss of engineering subject matter expertise (SME) points out that system engineering isn't a substitute for detailed technical knowledge (AW&ST June 9, p. 10). As a practicing system engineer, I couldn't agree more. Not that long ago, standing armies of disconnected technical experts (bricks), organizationally unable to logically link their contributions in a meaningful way (mortar), gave rise to the need for system engineering. The problem then was that even the best bricks, absent mortar, fell down too often. Today's approach of all mortar and no bricks doesn't seem like such a good idea either. This shouldn't be an "either/or" debate, but rather how best to establish and maintain a healthy balance. Perhaps the problem is that we too often speak of "system engineers" instead of people with genuine system engineering expertise. The difference is enormous.
