With a goal of exploring technologies for a future-generation of air-breathing tactical long-range strike weapons as well as hypersonic reconnaissance and responsive strike vehicles, Hifire covers a wide range of basic and applied research to understand hypersonic phenomena. Hifire follows on from Australia's successful Hyshot scramjet experiments and the more recent U.S.-Australian Hycause (hypersonic collaborative Aus-tralia/U.S. experiment) tests, and coordinates research performed with NASA, U.S. industry, the Australian Hyperson-ics Consortium and the University of Queensland. The Hifire experiments will be boosted by Terrier and Orion sounding rockets to test conditions at speeds in excess of Mach 7, and fall into two main categories. Three of the 10 will be aeroscience pay-loads focused mainly on reentry aerodynamic data gathering.
