The search for a sharp improvement in the fuel efficiency of next-generation narrow-body transports without compromising noise could lead to dramatic changes in nacelle technology and radically recast the supplier landscape. If it holds, the avowed objective at Boeing and Airbus of reducing fuel consumption by 15% will require sharp advances in materials, systems and integration, says Jean-Pierre Cojan, CEO of Safran/Aircelle, the European leader in nacelles and thrust reversers. And innovations in powerplant architecture could mean a radical departure from existing nacelle design, notably in the thrust reverser domain-and a solid advantage for companies able to harness the underlying technology, he says.
