Boeing is kicking off key system rehearsals for first flight of the 787 using the integrated test vehicle (ITV), or "Iron Bird" simulator. Until now the ITV-which is a hybrid test rig comprising flight control hardware and software, hydraulic systems and a cockpit-has been used for development rather than as a tool for actual flight test work. "We are at a point in the maturity level of the systems that we're now able to conduct tests as if they were real flight operations, conducted by our flight test organization with Boeing 787 flight test pilots," says 787 systems director Mike Sinnett. Work on the rig is designed to help engineers and test pilots prepare for the 787's first flight, now widely expected to take place in November, rather than late October as initially planned. The first flight was originally due in August 2007 with deliveries set for May 2008; however, production problems forced the start of flight tests to be slipped three times.
