The U-2 continues its crucial intelligence-collection role in South Korea even as Pentagon officials carefully craft a plan to retire the system and replace it with a new generation of unmanned surveillance aircraft. However, U-2 advocates say the system's special capabilities, with a pilot in the cockpit for operational flexibility, offer advantages over unmanned aircraft that will keep U-2s around longer than expected. The Pentagon is now considering delaying the aircraft's retirement. Plans now call for the last ones to leave service in the third quarter of Fiscal 2012. However, a proposal to keep them deployed until Fiscal 2014 is under review.
