Possible investors in Austrian Airlines have until the end of next week to submit non-binding offers to buy the 43% state-owned stake in the carrier. Five airlines have requested Austrian's sale prospectus from investment bank Merrill Lynch, which is handling the transaction. Three of them-Lufthansa, S7 Airlines and Turkish Airlines-have expressed their interest publicly, too. The other two have unofficially been identified as Air France"-KLM and Air China. The Austrian government this summer made a drastic strategy shift, abandoning plans to keep Austrian independent. A Boston Consulting study for the airline's board of directors showed that Austrian could survive on its own, but would have to dramatically downsize. The airline's executive vice president of sales and marketing, Andreas Bierwirth, says Austrian's fleet must be cut in half, to around 50 aircraft, if the carrier does not become part of a bigger concern.
