摘要

"Darpa at 50" (AW&ST Aug. 18/25, p. 54) was an excellent set of articles about the old ARPA. My first assignment out of U.S. Air Force Basic Training was as an engineering and scientific aide at the Air Force Special Weapons Center's Pulsed Power Laboratory. There, in 1959-61,1 was introducec to some very important things, especially for an enlistee recently out of college. One was the Vela Hotel series of satellites. We received weekly reports at the staff meeting with then-Maj. Lew Allen presenting the update. We were exploding wires and doing proof of concept on what would eventually become electromagnetic pulse simulation. One of the principal scientists was then-Capt. Jasper Welch. Both scientists went on to attain flag rank. Gen. Allen served as Air Force chief of staff, and Maj. Gen. Welch served as deputy chief of staff for studies and analysis. Art Gunther also was there and actively involved in the pulsed power research.
