The global airline industry's prospects for recovery are receding due to the likelihood of more huge losses in 2009, according to the International Air Transport Assn. Even if oil prices continue to swing in the airlines' favor, any cost cuts are destined to be overshadowed by steadily worsening demand. IATA's first projections for 2009-and new estimates for this year-are colored by a downturn in traffic that has become more apparent in the past few months. IATA economists see alarming signs even in regions like Asia-Pacific, previously a bastion of demand strength. And the cargo outlook, according to IATA Director General Giovanni Bisignani, is "even more worrying."
