The U.S. Air Force is planning to procure a single satellite to collect overhead imagery of the Middle East through its new Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) office. The requirement is an "urgent need" for commanders in the field at U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan, says Gary Payton, deputy undersecretary of the Air Force for space. The program doesn't yet have a name. It was only approved last week by Air Force Secretary Michael Donley. The need is for the U.S. to collect overhead imagery of areas such as Iran, where U.S. aircraft can't operate because they are protected by foreign air defenses. The Pentagon already operates U-2s and Global Hawks in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the Air Force controls the airspace.
