The Sept. 26 report on the status of the FAA's Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) program by the Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) represents a huge missed opportunity to get this program back on track (AW&ST Oct. 6, p. 62). What we need is a new ADS-B vision to replace the current World War II-vin-tage Mode C/S transponder technology with a state-of-the-art solution that can be deployed at a much lower cost. Instead of supporting the two-data-link strategy that the FAA is pursuing, the ARC should have recommended using ADS-B Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) technology as the single data link standard for U.S. air traffic.
