摘要

The parallels between today's Pentagon leadership in military aviation and the auto industry 20 years ago are striking. Executives have had a lack of strategic vision, failed to identify major threats and been unable to contain costs. Leadership looked to near-term goals while ignoring long-term strategies. Auto executives viewed the threat as being domestic rather than foreign rivals, much as the current Pentagon leadership is fixated on insurgencies and not near-peer competitors. Procurement is mired in ineffective bidding processes continually challenged by suppliers who can't deliver on time and at cost. Auto industry unions played a similar role. The halt in F-22 production and abrogation of congressional will is the most egregious act. This will cripple our ability to maintain air dominance and project power at long range, while increasing inefficiencies and costs. If history is a guide, the U.S. Air Force will not be competitive within two decades. The effect on the nation will be far worse than the economic debacle we now face.
