European aerospace leaders seek to extend their long-term research agenda to 2040-50, but also want accelerated action now on such areas as alternative fuels. Much of Europe's aeronautics research efforts have been driven by the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research (Acare), which set ambitious targets for the industry to meet by 2020, including devising technologies to cut noise and fuel burn 50%, or NOx by 80%. In recent months, Acare representatives have been debating what adjustments may be needed after several years of work, in part to reflect environmental concerns that have increased since program inception.
