Halfway through its $24-billion development contract, funding pressure on the Joint Strike Fighter is driving managers to propose eliminating two test aircraft from the flight-test program.rnFiscal stability is of paramount concern for Lockheed Martin and government officials. The program was sold to customers on the promise of affordability, gained through economies of scale. Nine partner nations are buying at least 3,000 of three variants of the F-35, with the U.S. portion at slightly more than 2,400 aircraft. The U.S. expects to spend about $299 billion on the program through its life cycle.
