Is a first officer with only 250 hr. total training time ready, and safe, to fly revenue passengers? The issue is one of several in the current industry debate about the Multi-crew Pilot (MPL) License, a program that the International Civil Aviation Organization is aiming to make the global standard for airline pilot training in 2010. The MPL program was devised to address the soaring demand for pilots to fly the expanding world fleet that is expected to serve 2.6 billion passengers by 2026 (see table, p. 52). In the U.S. alone, airline career specialist fltops.com forecasts 120,000 pilots will be required by 2026. Other forecasters say new aviation markets will need 140,000 pilots by 2012.
