摘要

The Air Force's air armament center at Eglin AFB, Fla., is officially in the hunt for high-power microwave (HPM) weapons to put in its munitions, cruise missiles and UAVs. Last week, the center issued a request for information, due Nov. 1, about "HPM source technology capabilities." It is interested in counter-electronics payloads that won't damage buildings or harm humans. Air Combat Command has been calling for such non-lethal weapons for several years, seeking ways to disable an enemy without killing civilians or permanently damaging water, power and communications capabilities. Taking out computers in military sensors, aircraft, vehicles, weapons or command and control centers is just fine, however. Eglin experimented with such weapons mounted in cruise missiles in the early 1990s, but aiming was difficult and results were unpredictable. HPM as a weapon has re-emerged as a by-product of advanced electronically scanned aperture radars modified to focus 1,000 or 1,500 transmitter elements on a single object to produce a damaging power spike. USAF wants items that can be in commercial production within a year, through normal acquisition or a Joint Capabilities Technology Demonstration.
