General Electric reaffirms that, despite recent signs of rapprochement with Airbus over developing an engine for the A350XWB, it still refuses to consider a larger GEnx for the A350-1000 version and says the go ahead for the rest of the family could hinge on the performance of the initial GEnx-1 B on the Boeing 787. Although eager to offer a competing engine against Rolls-Royce's TrentXWB for the new Airbus twin (AW&ST Nov. 12, p. 65), GE officials say its corporate leaders will not sanction development of a "me too" engine purely as a marketing gambit. "There is not going to be money to develop an engine until we can deliver something that's better than the competition, and that's why flight tests of the 787 are crucial," says a company representative.
