New high-speed data technology demonstrated on an F-15E slashed the time it takes to transfer the image of a target from the aircraft to a Joint Direct Attack Munition on its wing to one-half second from 11-12 sec. The modification allows data rates to be increased by up to 40 times on existing wiring in strike aircraft. It's not an optimum solution because it decreases the power of the signal through attenuation and degrades signal-to-noise ratios. But about $1 million per aircraft could be saved by not having to replace existing wiring, and up to six months of time in depot would be eliminated, say project officials from Boeing Phantom Works, Data Device Corp. and Honeywell Aerospace who worked on the demonstration.
