Apparently sensing a window of opportunity, Thales is earmarking more than $1 billion for acquisitions in a bid to grow its business by 25% over the next three years. Presenting 2005 results on Mar. 10, Chairman/CEO Denis Ranque confirmed that, with debt paid off from the purchase of Racal in 2000, the defense contractor is ready to renew "a strategy of conquest" to raise the critical mass of core businesses and reinforce its global network of defense affiliates (A W&STMar. 7, 2005, p. 30). Ranque says Thales feels it can invest 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) in new purchases through 2008 without impairing its debt rating.
