Travel industry executives are unhappy with a blacklist of unsafe carriers issued by the European Commission, and want the emphasis to shift from control of the airlines to the governments that regulate them. The list was published on Mar. 22 in answer to a series of crashes involving non-European operators that had produced an outcry for tougher safety standards for third-party airlines. The goal is to end discrepancies between various national lists and to ensure that a ban issued in one European Union nation will apply throughout the EU (AW&ST Mar. 27, p. 22).
